A Complete Guide to Dumpster Rental Restrictions

Before you rent a dumpster and start filling it with your junk, it’s important to know what you can put in the dumpster rental and our dumpster rental restrictions. As a result, some items have to be disposed of properly, and tossing them in a dumpster isn’t the correct way. It’s a good idea to discuss what you can put in your dumpster rental with the company you plan to rent from. So if there are specific items they will not allow, you might have to make special arrangements to dispose of those items.

Your Guide to What You Can Put in a Roll-Off Dumpster Rental

While the following guide will help you, some of the items you can throw away in a dumpster may vary from one location to another. Also, some counties don’t allow for vegetative material or will only allow for some types of vegetative material. Sometimes, this type of material cannot be mixed in with other types of junk or debris.

What Can You Put in Your Roll-Off Dumpster Rental?

The quick answer to this question is just about any non-hazardous waste, debris, or junk. This list includes:
  • Boxes
  • Dried Paint Cans
  • Toys
  • Rags
  • Clothing
  • Drywall
  • Wood
  • Furniture
  • Roofing Shingles
  • Siding
  • Construction Debris
  • Demolition Debris
  • Flooring
  • PVC
  • Cabinets
  • Sinks
  • Metal
  • Some types of rebar
  • Concrete
  • Dirt
  • Water Damaged Materials
  • Screens
  • Fired Damaged items
  • Tables
  • Documents
  • And more!
Let’s break the list down a bit further and look at some of the things you can put in your dumpster rental and some of the dumpster rental restrictions.

Household Junk Items

Just about anything falling under the category of household junk can go into your dumpster rental. Also, couches and other types of furniture can be disposed of in your dumpster. Some of the furniture items you can discard in your dumpster rental include:
  • Couches
  • Tables
  • Chairs
  • Book Cases
  • Barstools
  • Entertainment Centers
  • China Cabinets
  • Hutches
  • Dressers
  • End Tables
All of these items are acceptable in a roll-off dumpster rental.

Appliances

Some appliances can be tossed out in your roll-off dumpster, but others cannot. As a result, you can toss out ranges, microwaves, dishwashers, washers, dryers, and most other household appliances in your dumpster rental. However, you will need to remove any hazardous fluids or components, such as freon from an air conditioner. Unless you have experience with removing freon from appliances, you should hire an appliance repair specialist to handle this for you. Also, the refrigerant has to be completely removed or you won’t be able to put the appliance in the dumpster.

Yard Waste

You can dispose of yard waste in most areas with your roll-off dumpster. So make sure to check local regulations if you plan to mix yard waste with other types of debris. Some of the yard waste you can toss out includes:
  • Trees
  • Branches
  • Grass
  • Sod
  • Mulch
  • Brush
Any other vegetative waste will be allowed in your dumpster, as long as the local ordinances allow for it. Some areas recycle this type of material, so it may not be able to be mixed with other types of trash.

Construction Debris

Roll-off dumpster rentals work great for construction sites. You can toss out all types of trash including:
  • Heavy debris
  • Brick and stone
  • Drywall
  • Concrete
  • Wood
  • Asphalt
  • Shingles
  • Tile
  • Insulation
Most materials used in construction will be able to go into your dumpster rental and be disposed of. There are not many dumpster rental restrictions when it comes to common construction debris.

Some Dumpster Rental Restrictions to Follow

Some of the things you cannot toss out with a roll-off dumpster rental have been listed above, such as the freon component of a household appliance. However, there are several other dumpster rental restrictions you should be aware of before you rent a roll off container.

Paint, Stains, and Lacquers

Dumpster rentals don’t allow for paint, lacquers, wood stains, and paint thinners. You can get rid of leftover latex paint, however. Once the paint has dried and hardened, you can dispose of it in the dumpster. You can make this process happen faster by pouring the paint into a shallow pan, over shredded paper, or over kitty litter. Most of these types of items can be disposed of at a local recycling center.

Tires and Mattresses

Most landfills in the United States won’t take tires or mattresses. As a result, you will not be allowed to put old tires or mattresses in your roll-off dumpster rental.

Hazardous Materials

Most of our dumpster rental restrictions have to do with hazardous items. Many hazardous materials are not allowed in your dumpster rental, such as:
  • Asbestos
  • Pesticides
  • Motor oil
  • Propane tanks
  • Ink
  • Resins
  • Gasoline
Any material classified as hazardous waste material needs to be properly disposed of at your local landfill or through a recycling center.

Batteries

You cannot put car batteries or dry-cell batteries in your dumpster rental. They could leak, which means harmful chemicals will end up in the environment. Batteries can be recycled at most retail stores that sell car batteries instead.

Why Dumpster Rental Restrictions are so Important?

When you rent a dumpster, you will need to follow the dumpster rental restrictions or you might incur extra fees. While we don’t use extra fees, typically, if you toss out items that are not allowed in a dumpster rental, it will cause our team extra work, which will require a trip fee. Keeping your dumpster rental with your budget is simple, however. All you have to do is follow the dumpster rental restrictions, which our team will cover when you rent from us. You will know exactly what you can and cannot toss out with a roll off rental from us. It’s important to know what you can put in your dumpster and what’s not allowed.
